Comment on The Nation Without Mirrors by Al Cantwell

I read "The Nation Without Mirrors" with interest. Many of the things you say I agree with. On the other hand, in my 10+ months in PV, I've actually come to appreciate things about the States that I either overlooked or just took for granted all the years I lived there. A personal turning point for me in my estimation of Mexico came recently when I learned that you can be jailed in this country if you don't or can't pay your doctor's bills. Thank God the US doesn't have debtors prisons -- lots of folks would be behind bars.

The majority of my friends here are Mexican, not American, and when you gain their confidence, they open up to you about the dark side of their country. Your observation about the American sense of entitlement is no doubt justified, but the other extreme seems to apply to Mexico. Over and over I've heard my Mexican friends say some variation of the following: "This country is fucked because we don't expect anything better." (Forgive me if the expletive offends, but their use of "chingado" is deliberate and crucial to their assessment of how things are in their country. )

Another fundamental difference -- possibly bordering on a generalization -- is that Americans seem to be optimists while Mexicans tend to be fatalists. It is an interesting question to ponder whether Americans' optimism fuels their sense of entitlement and, by contrast, if Mexicans' fatalism plays some role in their dearth of expectations.

(As an aside, I'm always intrigued when I hear American expats praise Mexico and hear Mexicans lament that their country isn't more like the US. The old saying, "The grass is greener on the other other side," comes to mind.)

So I suppose what I get from this is that the middle ground, as usual, is where any nation's citizens should strive to be: have some expectations, but don't go overboard with the sense of entitlement.

Your post gives me a lot to reflect on. The foregoing are my initial thoughts, but undoubtedly more will come to mind. Gracias for the excellent post.

Comment on Why I don’t give a damn about Casey Anthony by Lisa

I am such a baaaad American that I really didn't know who this Casey Anthony person was and what it was she supposedly did until the whole trial process was really far along. I pretty much agree with everything you said here. Some of the intense focus was due to the weird idealization/demonization of mothers (sorta the mom version of Madonna/Whore as it were). And some of it was typical Bread and Circuses stuff. Keep the masses distracted so they can't see what's really going on (i.e., the massive transfer of wealth from the poor/working/middle classes to the extremely wealthy), or at least obscuring the reasons for it.

Yes well said... Obama encourages us to really look at our lives and THINK about who we want to be and GO for it. He demonstrated a mastery of relentless commitment to his dreams. Can't think of ANYTHING I have done for 22 months with such intensity. Of course he would be our President.

What a stunningly perceptive and well-written piece. I especially liked the part about Obama. It reminded me that we should always keep trying for ourselves, our country and our planet. Thanks Terra

By the way, speaking of Sloth-No-More, these guys are really, really slow. My little avatar is a picture of a sloth I happened across in Costa Rica. Very rare to see one of these guys on the ground as they spend 99.9% of their time in trees!
